Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami Arrested By Mumbai Police, Social Media Sets On Fire
Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami has been arrested by Mumbai police in a two-year-old suicide case on Wednesday. The news has taken social media by storm and several political leaders took to Twitter to express their views on Goswami's arrest. The Republic TV Editor-in-Chief has been arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer, Anvay Naik, and his mother, in 2018. The designer and his mother had accused Arnab of not paying their dues.
The controversial Indian journalist, who is often in news for his aggressive style of reporting, is currently being taken to Alibaug after his arrest.
Several BJP leaders have condemned the arrest of Goswami and have called it an attack on freedom of the press. External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar tweeted, "Shades of the Emergency! The arrest of Arnab Goswami is an attack on the freedom of Press. Those who really believe in this freedom must speak up!"
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Congress and its allies are shaming democracy once again. He said that Arnab's arrest is a Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV and is an attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy.
"It reminds us of the Emergency. This attack on free press must be and WILL BE OPPOSED," Shah tweeted.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has also slammed opposition parties for Arnab's arrest and attack on freedom of press in Maharashtra.
However, several Congress and Shiv Sena members from Maharashtra's ruling government have denied any political agenda behind the arrest. Talking about the same, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said, "The law is followed in Maharashtra. Police can take action if they have evidence against anyone. Since the formation of the Uddhav Thackeray government, no action has been taken against anyone for revenge."
Social media sites are filled with mixed reactions from netizens after the news of Goswami's arrest. While many are in full support of him and are demanding President's Rule in Maharashtra, others are saying that if a case was registered against him then he should follow the course of law.
Several photos and videos are being circulated on social media where Arnab Goswami is alleging that he was assaulted by the Mumbai police.
Following the news, many journalists have also come in support of Arnab Goswami.
